On an Afternoon Stroll

I went for an afternoon walk during the week in downtown Chicago. It was one of the first warm days in March and the wind was perfect – what a nice opportunity to escape work for a minute! I took a stroll up to theChicago River and parked my heels there to enjoy the sun.

As countless others have already said, Chicago is a beautiful city. I glanced up at the skyscrapers and admired the way they surrounded the river – sort of like a threatening and imposing crew. The river in return reflected a reverse image of the city’s architecture. In that moment, I was about to praise man for the work of his hands, thinking “My, look what man has made.” But immediately, my heart reminded me that “the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.1

Yes, men did the work, and laid down the blueprints so that the city would look just like so; but the capacity and intellect needed to create its beauty was released from God himself. The earth is Lord’s and everything in it. Why then, do people run arrogantly believing they have things in their control? Why do nations plot and the people make useless plans2?

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all who live in it are His. Though some do not acknowledge Him and others even revolt against Him, God can steer their hearts in whatever direction He pleases3. If you call yourself His child, why then must you drift like the rest? Why scheme and scurry to win the company of men?

Breathe, my dear. The earth is your Father’s and everything in it.

Don’t just take my word for it:

Psalm 24:1

2 Psalm 2:1

3 Proverbs 21:1
